About the Author - Keith Hevenor
For nearly 20 years, I've been involved in some segment of the commercial prepress and printing industry. Fresh out of college in the mid-80s with a BA in English, I thought I may want to get into the newspaper industry. An opening in the advertising department as a traffic and layout coordinator for the prestigious Christian Science Monitor in Boston intrigued me as a way to get in on the ground floor and work my way over to writing, so I took the job and was quickly immersed in the ins and outs of traditional typesetting and paste-up. I loved the job and kept it until the entire department was phased out when the management decided to do away with paid advertising.
In the job market again in 1989, I knew I wanted to stay in the production field. I landed a job as a magazine production manager for PennWell Corporation, a global media company with headquarters in Tulsa, OK. I have been working for PennWell ever since, and played an active role in the company's transition to desktop publishing and electronic prepress in the early 90s. When PennWell bought a magazine called TypeWorld, its owner had served as publisher, editor, and production manager. The company recognized the need for an individual who could handle both the production and the writing inside PennWell, and I asked for the opportunity. That was the beginning of my editorial career, and I've been involved in the editorial development of several other PennWell magazines in the graphic arts markets over the years. TypeWorld evolved into Electronic Publishing in 1997, and serving as its editor has been my privilege for many years.
In the fall of 2005, PennWell acquired CMM International, and I took on the additional role of serving as its Editorial/Conference Director. My responsibilities include developing e-newsletters and webcasts, reworking the CMM website, and designing and managing the conference portion of the CMM International show, taking place June 4-7, 2007 in Rosemont, Illinois.
